abstract = {We present the results of 300 pc resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array imaging of the [O III] 88 μm line and dust continuum emission from a z = 8.312 Lyman-break galaxy MACS0416_Y1. The velocity-integrated [O III] emission has three peaks that are likely associated with three young stellar clumps of MACS0416_Y1, while the channel map shows a complicated velocity structure with little indication of a global velocity gradient unlike what was found in [C II] 158 μm at a larger scale, suggesting random bulk motion of ionized gas clouds inside the galaxy. In contrast, dust emission appears as two individual clumps apparently separating or bridging the [O III]/stellar clumps. The cross-correlation coefficient between dust and ultraviolet-related emission (i.e., [O III] and ultraviolet continuum) is unity on a galactic scale, while it drops at <1 kpc, suggesting well-mixed geometry of multiphase interstellar media on subkiloparsec scales. If the cutoff scale characterizes different stages of star formation, the cutoff scale can be explained by gravitational instability of turbulent gas. We also report on a kiloparsec-scale off-center cavity embedded in the dust continuum image. This could be a superbubble producing galactic-scale outflows, since the energy injection from the 4 Myr starburst suggested by a spectral energy distribution analysis is large enough to push the surrounding media creating a kiloparsec-scale cavity.},

abstract = {Direct collapse of supermassive stars is a possible pathway to form supermassive black hole seeds at high redshifts. Whereas previous three-dimensional (3D) simulations demonstrate that supermassive stars form via rapid mass accretion, those resolving the stellar interior have been limited. Here, we report 3D radiation-hydrodynamic (RHD) simulations following the evolution of rapidly accreting protostars resolving the stellar interior. We use an adaptive mesh refinement code with our newly developed RHD solver employing an explicit M1 closure method. We follow the early evolution until the stellar mass reaches ~10 M _{⊙} from two different initial configurations of spherical and turbulent clouds. We demonstrate that, in both cases, a swollen protostar whose radius is 100-1000 R _{⊙} appears, as predicted by the stellar evolution calculations. Its effective temperature remains a few thousand Kelvin, and the radiative feedback by ionizing photons is too weak to disturb the accretion flow up to the epoch examined in this work. In the turbulent case, the protostar rotates rapidly at more than 0.4 times the Keplerian velocity owing to the angular momentum provided by the initial turbulence. The protostar approximates an oblate spheroid, and its equatorial radius is more than twice the polar radius. Our results suggest that we need to consider the rapid stellar rotation to elucidate the realistic 3D protostellar evolution in the supermassive star formation.},

abstract = {Using radiation-hydrodynamic cosmological simulations, we present a detailed (0.1 pc resolution), physically motivated portrait of a typical-mass dwarf galaxy before the epoch of reionization, resolving the formation, and evolution of star clusters into individual 10 M_{⊙} star particles. In the rest-frame ultraviolet, the galaxy has an irregular morphology with no bulge or disc, dominated by light emitted from numerous, compact, and gravitationally-bound star clusters. This is especially interesting in light of recent James Webb Space Telescope observations that - aided by the magnifying power of gravitational lenses - have imaged, at parsec-scale resolution, individual young star clusters forming in similar galaxies at z> 6. Because of their low metallicities and high temperatures, star-forming gas clouds in this galaxy have densities ~100 times higher than typical giant molecular clouds; hence, their expected star formation efficiencies (SFEs) are high enough (around 10 - 70 per cent) to produce a sizeable population of potential globular cluster progenitors, but typically smaller (a few 100 - 2 ×10^{4}M_{⊙}, half-mass radii of up to 3 pc) and of lower metallicities (10^{-3.5}- 10^{-2.5} Z_{⊙}). The initial mass function of the star-forming clouds is log-normal, whereas the bound star cluster mass function is a power-law with a slope that depends mainly on SFE but also on the temporal proximity to a major starburst. We find slopes between -0.5 and -2.5 depending on the assumed sub-grid SFE. Star formation is self-regulated on galactic scales; however, the multimodal metallicity distribution of the star clusters and the fraction of stars locked into surviving bound star clusters depends on SFE.},

abstract = {We model Pop III star formation in different FUV and X-ray backgrounds, including radiation feedback from protostars. We confirm previous results that a moderate X-ray background increases the number of Pop III systems per unit cosmological volume, but masses and multiplicities of the system are reduced. The stellar mass function also agrees with previous results, and we confirm the outward migration of the stars within the protostellar discs. We find that nearly all Pop III star systems are hierarchical, i.e. binaries of binaries. Typically, two equal-mass stars form near the centre of the protostellar disc and migrate outwards. Around these stars, mini-discs fragment forming binaries that also migrate outwards. Stars may also form at Lagrange points L4/L5 of the system. Afterwards, star formation becomes more stochastic due to the large multiplicity, and zero-metallicity low-mass stars can form when rapidly ejected from the disc. Stars in the disc often have eccentric orbits, leading to a periodic modulation of their accretion rates and luminosities. At the pericentre, due to strong accretion, the star can enter a red-supergiant phase reaching nearly Eddington luminosity in the optical bands (m_{AB} ~ 34 for a 100 M_{⊙} star at z = 6). During this phase, the star, rather than its nebular lines, can be observed directly by JWST, if sufficiently magnified by a gravitational lens. The ~10 000 AU separations and high eccentricities of many Pop III star binaries in our simulations are favourable parameters for IMBH mergers - and gravitational waves emission - through orbital excitation by field stars.},

abstract = {We present updated measurements of the [O III] 88 μm, [C II] 158 μm, and dust continuum emission from a star-forming galaxy at z = 7.212, SXDF-NB1006-2, by utilizing Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) archival data sets analysed in previous studies and data sets that have not been analysed before. The follow-up ALMA observations with higher angular resolution and sensitivity reveal a clumpy structure of the [O III] emission on a scale of 0.32-0.85 kpc. We also combined all the ALMA [O III] ([C II]) data sets and updated the [O III] ([C II]) detection to 5.9σ (3.6σ-4.5σ). The non-detection of [C II] with data from the REBELS large program implies the incompleteness of spectral-scan surveys using [C II] to detect galaxies with high star formation rates (SFRs) but marginal [C II] emission at high-z. The dust continuum at 90 and 160 μm remains undetected, indicating little dust content of <3.9 × 10^{6} M _{⊙} (3σ), and we obtained a more stringent constraint on the total infrared luminosity. We updated the [O III]/[C II] luminosity ratios to 10.2 $±$ 4.7 (6.1 $±$ 3.5) and 20 $±$ 12 (9.6 $±$ 6.1) for the 4.5σ and 3.6σ [C II] detections, respectively, where the ratios in the parentheses are corrected for the surface brightness dimming effect on the extended [C II] emission. We also found a strong [C II] deficit (0.6-1.3 dex) between SXDF-NB1006-2 and the mean L _{[C II]}-SFR relation of galaxies at 0 < z < 9.},

abstract = {We conduct a ^{12}C^{16}O(J = 1-0) (hereafter CO) mapping survey of 64 galaxies in the Fornax cluster using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Morita array in cycle 5. CO emission is detected from 23 out of the 64 galaxies. Our sample includes dwarf, spiral, and elliptical galaxies with stellar masses of M _{star} ~ 10^{6.3-11.6} M _{⊙}. The achieved beam size and sensitivity are 15″ × 8″ and ~12 mJy beam^{-1} at the velocity resolution of ~10 km s^{-1}, respectively. We study the cold gas (molecular and atomic gas) properties of 38 subsamples with M _{star} > 10^{9} M _{⊙} combined with literature H I data. We find that (1) the low star formation (SF) activity in the Fornax galaxies is caused by the decrease in the cold gas mass fraction with respect to stellar mass (hereafter, gas fraction) rather than the decrease of the SF efficiency from the cold gas; (2) the atomic gas fraction is more heavily reduced than the molecular gas fraction of such galaxies with low SF activity. A comparison between the cold gas properties of the Fornax galaxies and their environmental properties suggests that the atomic gas is stripped tidally and by the ram pressure, which leads to the molecular gas depletion with an aid of the strangulation and consequently SF quenching. Preprocesses in the group environment would also play a role in reducing cold gas reservoirs in some Fornax galaxies.},
